The short version
We built We Were Here around anonymity. We collect as little as possible, we don't store your personal information, and we never sell or share your data with anyone.
Who we are
We Were Here is an independent archive project. If you have any privacy questions you can reach us at privacy@wwh26.com.
What we collect
When you place your moment, you provide:
- A photo
- Your occupation
- Your country
- The year
That is all that is permanently stored. These four things make up your moment in the archive.
What we don't collect
- Your name
- Your email address permanently — we use it once to send your receipt and it is not stored afterward
- Your social media handles
- Your location beyond the country you select
- Any browsing behaviour or usage data
Your moment
Before placing your moment you are asked to explicitly acknowledge that it cannot be edited once placed. We Were Here reserves the right to remove any tile that violates our terms of service or where we are legally required to do so. This right exists solely to protect the integrity of the archive and is not exercised lightly.
Payment
Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not see or store your payment details. Stripe's own privacy policy governs how your payment information is handled.
Receipt emails are sent via Resend, a third-party email service. Your email address is passed to Resend solely for delivery and is not retained by us after the email is sent.
Where your data is stored
The We Were Here archive is hosted on servers in the United States via Vercel and Supabase. By placing your moment you acknowledge your data is stored in the United States.
Who sees your moment
Your moment — photo, occupation, country, year — is visible on the We Were Here canvas to anyone who visits the site.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have rights regarding your personal data under laws including GDPR (Europe), the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, and CCPA (California). If you have any privacy concerns please contact us at privacy@wwh26.com and we will respond within 30 days.
Cookies and tracking
We will update this section once our analytics and payment integrations are finalised. We are committed to using only what is necessary.
Changes to this policy
If we make meaningful changes to this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
